"We believe no new child care provider should go into financial hardships to create a business so critical to the success of the community," says Lynnette Wyn, director of Family Connections, a home-based child care resource and referral agency in Oregon.

That's why Linn-Benton Community College has launched the 2024 Linn-Benton-Lincoln Family Child Care Start-Up Grant Fund, which offers up to $10,000 in grants to home-based child care businesses in Linn, Benton, and Lincoln counties, the Oregonian reports.

An initiative to create more home-based child care services known as Growing Care, spearheaded by Family Connections, saw 16 new programs licensed in the past year which marked a 45% increase from previous years, college officials say.

Growing Care is funded by the John and Ginger Niemeyer Foundation, the United Way, the Siletz Charitable Fund, the Tim Ann McQueary Fund, and the Lincoln County Board of Commissioners.

"We're doing our part to make that happen," Wyn says.
